A Game of Chess

(Prelude)

“There are more moves in a game of chess than there are grains of sand on all the beaches in the world.”

– Unknown

Promises were made, to almighty I have prayed,

Through all the hardships I know my dues will be paid.

Running out of options? Of that i’m not afraid.

There’s still a game of chess that’s yet to be played.

Pawns, knights, and bishops, I move around all my pieces,

Seek out a checkmate, that’s finding out what peace is.

Year after year, I can feel how the stress increases,

I wear my heart on my sleeve with all of its creases.

At this stage of my life, I must pause and wonder,

Did I grow wings to fly or to take folks under?

Is a no-move better than making a blunder?

Do I miss the lightning cause I fear the thunder?

Rooks, king, and queen, I don’t want to procrastinate,

I don’t want to miss shots because I hesitate.

There are infinite moves for me to navigate,

This game I’m playing won’t finish with a stalemate.
